Robert Davison is a Professor of Information Systems at the City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on the use and misuse of information systems, especially with respect to problem solving, guanxi formation and knowledge management. He is particularly known for his scholarship in the domain of action research. Robert is the Editor-in-Chief of the Information Systems Journal, the Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries and the Journal of Information Systems Practice. He is also Chair of IFIP’s Technical Committee 9 (ICT and Society). As a researcher and as an editor, he seeks to promote both an inclusive and an indigenous perspective to research. 1) Introduction to the workshop and its structure.
2) The essence of problematisation as a basis for motivating research projects, with examples of problems and the associated projects. This will include time for the participants to contribute their own ideas about how they might motivate their own research, with feedback from the facilitator and general discssion.
3) A tutorial in the operation and application of Action Research. This will include material on methods, theory, and contributions to both scholarly and practical knowledge

4) An illustration of how AR works in practice using published cases.
5) Discussion with the participants about these cases, and the issues that arise

6) Participant presentation of their own planned project areas: 20-30 mins per person (depending on how many participants there are), followed by analysis and discussion within the group, identification of potential problems and possible solutions.
7) Final wrap-up by the facilitator, with highlights of the workshop, key learning points, resources for future work, and publication opportunities: we can commission a special issue of the Information Systems Practice Journal to receive high quality submissions from the participants in the workshop.
Preparation:
Participants will need to read 2-3 published articles in advance. They also need to be prepared to present their own Action Research ideas/projects.

Credit points
Doctoral students participating in the seminar can obtain 2 credit points. This requires participating on all of the days and completing the assignment.
Registration fee
This seminar is free-of-charge for Inforte.fi member organization's staff and their PhD students. For others the participation fee is 400 €. The participation fee includes access to the event and the event materials. Lunch and dinner are not included.
