Description

In the digital economy, the digital information that individuals and organizations have access to shapes the perception of reality. IT applications engage the attention of their users in discussions, interpretations, clues and automatic analysis that can either favor their decision and action or misguide them. It is more important than ever to recognize the impact of IT applications on organizational attention. The theory of Attention-based view of the firm (Ocasio, 1997), the theory of attentional triangulation (Rerup, 2009) and the concept of organizational mindfulness (Weick et al., 2008) provide important theoretical support for the study of organizational attention. Dernbecher and Beck (2017) present how individual and collective attention has been addressed in Information Systems, providing the starting point for further studies in this field.
This two-day course contemplates the exploration of the theoretical perspectives on organizational attention and the analysis of practical cases of lack of organizational attention. It is also intended to explore research opportunities in the area of IT adoption and organizational mindfulness. Participants will be asked to read papers and cases in advance. The course will be divided into 2 expository sessions, 2 case discussion workshops and 1 creativity session to design individual research projects in IS.
